LAKE MACQUARIE
Labor is expected to hold the balance of power in at least two Hunter councils after strong swings towards the party in Saturday’s local government elections.
“Labor is back and we’re back for good,” said councillor and incoming Mayor of Lake Macquarie Kay Fraser, as she delivered her victory speech to a crowd of about 60 party faithful at the Windale Gateshead Bowling Club.
LEETON
Early on Sunday morning, mayor Paul Maytom had received the most votes and was sitting on 2293 first preference votes, which is 38.90 per cent of the votes counted. Updates here

Wendy Waller steadily holds 39.7 per cent of the votes against Liberal’s Tony Hadchiti with 31.6 per cent. – but this election will most likely be decided on preferences. More updates

PORT MACQUARIE
On first preferences, Peter Besseling has on Saturday evening secured 58.03% (or 16,951 votes) of the vote for the position of mayor over his nearest rival. Counting resumes Sunday morning but Peter Besseling with a convincing lead over Peta Pinson and Sharon Griffiths for the mayoral hat will be returned to the position, the Port News reports. SINGLETON
Singleton's next mayor is likely to be decided on preferences with Sue Moore leading current mayor John Martin by 400 votes at close of counting on Saturday night. Read more
SHOALHAVEN
Shoalhaven voters have delivered an emphatic message to council, walking away from Team Gash. The mayoral contest is between incumbent Joanna Gash and Greens candidate Amanda Findley and will be decided by the flow of preferences and the postal vote. Support for Joanna Gash has collapsed by almost half since her landslide election victory in 2012 while Amanda Findley has tripled, bearing mind it was a five-way contest in 2012. Read more

It looks to be a safe bet that Duncan Gair (Independent) and Graham McLaughlin (Labor) will each win two council seats, with Grahame Andrews (Independent) and Gordon Markwart (The Greens) joining them, the Southern Highlands News reports. More updates

Senior Labor and Liberal figures agree the election is too close to call, and the final makeup of the council may not be known for days. The most likely scenario is the 15 member council will comprise seven Liberal and seven Labor councillors and one Independent. More updates

The count result might not be known for a few days but already hopeful candidates are gathering across Tamworth. URALLA
Mayoral election has Michael Pearce leading with 965, ahead on Bob Crouch 590, Tom O’Connor 387, Isabel Strutt has 257 and has overtaken Natasha Ledger on 206, according to late Saturday night’s count. Follow The Armidale Express’s live coverage here.
WAGGA
Around half of the formal votes have been counted and the big shock is none of the ungrouped candidates appear likely to be elected, including deputy mayor Dallas Tout and councillor Greg Conkey. Retiring councillor Julian McLaren has been crunching the numbers and claimed the six certainties for Wagga council are Rod Kendall (Next Generation), Tim Koschel (Next Generation), Dan Hayes (Country Labor), Vanessa Keenan (Country Labor), Paul Funnell and Kerry Pascoe.
