Staff from Roberts Nambucca Real Estate were selling fresh Daffodils, teddy bears, raffle tickets and more, while members from the Nambucca Valley Nashos manned the barbecue to launch the state's most iconic fundraiser.
This year marks 30 years of Daffodil Day in Australia.
Locally, thanks to continued efforts by Roberts Nambucca Real Estate, over the past 11 years more than $100,000 has been raised – $14,000 last year alone.
Though unfortunately, the lead-up to this year’s Daffodil Day event has been filled with heartache, with local identity Rita Roberts passing away.
“It’s been very quiet this year,” Donna Phelps told the Guardian.
“We didn’t do as much as we have in the past – with Rita’s passing.
“But we knew she’s want us to go ahead with is, so we’ve pushed through.
“It’s a good cause. We won’t meet last year’s total, but every little bit counts.”
As the largest national fundraising event in the Southern Hemisphere, this year Cancer Council hopes to raise $2.6m in NSW and $6.7m nationally. Since its inception, Daffodil Day has raised over $133m for life-saving cancer research, support services and prevention programs.
“By buying and wearing a pin on this national day of hope, locals can continue contributing to life-saving cancer research, advocacy, prevention programs and support services,” Daffodil Day coordinator Sarah Royall said.
“Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer, with 1 in 2 Australians predicted to be diagnosed by age 85.
“We encourage everyone to make a difference by supporting Cancer Council this Daffodil Day.
“Get out there, wear a pin, and give some fresh daffodils to someone you know.”
