Nominated by the Lismore Diocese for his work in the local community, Dominic was thrilled to be chosen for this once in a lifetime opportunity
Before flying out Dominic said he was excited to represent not only the Diocese, but Aboriginal people and particularly youth.
“I completed an Aboriginal Youth Leadership Program in my last year of high school and I have since taken these skills into the community,” Dominic said.
“I am currently studying a Certificate III in Gumbaynggirr Language and Culture which I complete after work hours plus I have worked part-time on the Unkya Local Aboriginal Land Council’s Eco Tours which include talks to local primary and high school kids and staff.
“I have also been a casual Gumbaynggirr Language teacher at St Patricks School in Macksville and Macksville Primary School and I assist Aboriginal staff at St Mary’s and act as Aboriginal Mentor to deliver programs for visiting Aboriginal Students.”
Dominic has now started a part-time job with Enterprise & Training Company (ETC) as part of the New Careers for Aboriginal People (NCAP) program in May this year.
“I work as an assistant to Aunty Jen (Rosser) and we go out to communicate and network in the community, to help Aboriginal people with employment and training as part of the NCAP Program – it is a great program which has understanding and compassion for Aboriginal people.”
Dominic encourages all young people to find something they are passionate about and to not be afraid to ask for help.
ETC Aboriginal Employer Advisor Jennie Rosser (Aunty Jen) said she was thrilled to have Dominic on the team.
“He is a great role model to other young Aboriginal people,” Jennie said.
The New Careers for Aboriginal People (NCAP) program funded by the Department of Industry, State Training Service, Aboriginal Service, aims to assist Aboriginal people into employment and/or training. To find out more contact Jennie Rosser on 0419 895 170 or visit etcltd.com.au
