Students from Nambucca Valley Christian Community School in Years 5-10 have been rehearsing regularly to recreate Lucy Maud Montgomery’s timeless classic novel. The novel, about a Canadian orphan, was published 99 years ago, and it and its sequels have sold some 50 million copies.
It has spawned at least 10 movies and television shows (including an anime version in Japan, where the books have cult status). And the musical, Anne of Green Gables, is the longest-running in Canada, going strong since 1965.
Locally, the NVCCS students will be performing amid the old style charm of the Bowraville Theatre and will endeavor to transport audiences back in time as they bring to life the story of the imaginative red-haired orphan mistakenly sent to live with the middle-aged siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, who actually wanted a boy.
All the most memorable highlights will be faithfully reenacted to follow the hot-headed and energetic Anne and her long-standing adversary, Gilbert Blythe, as they negotiate the rocky transition from childhood to adolescence. Fans of the book are sure to be delighted!
In addition to the fresh youthfulness that these young actors infuse into the well-loved characters, audiences are guaranteed to be unconsciously captivated by clever modern backdrops and a subtle yet moving musical underscore equalling any modern stage play.
Prepare to have your heartstrings tugged and your funny bones tickled!
Tickets are available from the school's front office on 6568-9311 for $5 to the matinee production or $6 concession/child, $10 per adult or $30 for a family for the evening performances.
Performances: 1pm Wednesday July 27; 6.30pm Wednesday July 27; 6.30pm Thursday July 28, 6.30pm Friday July 29.
The school invites the community to attend this memorable classic.
Rebecca White (Drama) and Carolyn Allen (Music) are the co-directors of the production.
