Federal Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker and State Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey have welcomed the news that the 22 kilometres of four-lane divided road will open on August 2.
“The upgrade, which includes new interchanges at Waterfall Way, Nambucca Heads and Ballards Rd south of Urunga, will improve safety and save road users travel time,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“This will be the second major Pacific Highway upgrade to open to traffic this year marking 70 per cent completion of the Hexham to Queensland Boarder duplication.
”Finishing work is under way including asphalt surfacing, landscaping, line marking, signage, guard rail installation and a settlement period for the road surface at the northern end of the project.”
The Frederickton to Eungai section of the highway project opened in April.
Mrs Pavey said all aspects of the road are being tested and inspected to provide a long-lasting, durable highway able to cater for current and future traffic demands.
She said quality assurance was an important phase for projects of this magnitude.
“More than 200,000 cubic metres of concrete has been placed across the project and quality assurance work has been factored into the delivery of the project, which remains on track to open in coming weeks,” Mrs Pavey said.
“As work continues, road users are asked to follow the direction of traffic controllers, keep to the reduced speed limits and follow traffic signs and lights when displayed.
“The community will continue to be updated and their patience while this upgrade has been under construction is to be commended.”
Nambucca Shire Council Mayor Rhonda Hoban said the construction phase had driven jobs and economic growth in the local economy and would make that section of the highway significantly safer.
“We will have enhanced driver safety and the improvements along numerous sections of the old highway will ensure the road network as a whole is improved,” Cr Hoban said.
The NSW Government is also committed to carrying out work to improve safety and upgrade the intersection of Valla Beach Rd and the Pacific Highway.
Details of this work are being finalised, which is expected to be carried out after the Nambucca Heads to Urunga project opens to traffic.
