Being thrust into division 2, despite recommendations from the club to Netball NSW to drop them down to division 3, it was always going to be a difficult task for the young side.
“We didn’t want to be in division two,” coach Mel Angel told the Guardian.
“We went away knowing it was going to be a very hard task – being just under championship division.
“But the girls did play very well against some of the major city-based teams, and of course, some games could have had a more favourable result, but it is what it is.”
Despite the less-than-desirable result, the girls maintained a positive attitude and sportsmanship across the event.
“The girls bonded well this year, and gave it all they could. I look forward to them being an older team next year down in division 3.”
STATE CHAMPS STATISTICS
IT WAS another fantastic long weekend of sporting action as the Netball NSW family came out in force for the Championships.
Newcastle and Charlestown Netball Associations were hives of activity as teams of all ages and backgrounds came together for three days of back-to-back netball.
So how much netball was actually played? Well, according to the numbers … plenty!
Netball NSW broke down some of the statistics around the 2016 State Championships.
* Number of teams taking part: 117
* Number of players participating: 1170
* Number of Associations represented: 72
* Number of team officials involved: 350
* Number of umpires officiating: 230
* Number of games played: 1217
* Number of goals scored: 41,093
* Total minutes of netball played: 31,642… which equals just over 527 hours, almost 22 days!
* Total number of draws: 41 (just three per cent of games played)
* Total number of games with a difference of one goal: 78
