A slight delay, and the march pushed ahead regardless, led by Ladybird and her carer Norm Cheeseman, honouring Hilton 'Joe' Mitchell, whose absence left a hole in the event for many.
Songs, prayers, a poem read by St Mary's Year 2 student Cobie Truscott and the roll of honour were the essence of what was an impressive gathering of family and friends in the verandah-post town.
By the end of the ceremony, the sun had returned and the skies cleared as servicemen and women laid their sprigs of rosemary at the foot of the cenotaph, followed by the sombre notes of the Last Post.
