Tomorrow the results of the Dorrigo lad’s hard work will be revealed as he squares up against Steven ‘Lightning Sparks’ in Toowoomba, for what will be his third fight as a boxing pro.
The program is a good one, featuring heavyweight boxer, State of Origin player and high profile Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks captain Paul Gallen.
“The offer came out of the blue,” his coach Ian ‘Sparra’ Stapleton said.
“It is a great opportunity and we had it all sorted within two phone calls.”
Danny is in form after his two previous fights (a narrow loss and a draw), both of which Sparra said he should have won.
“It’ll be hard but I am looking forward to it,” Danny said between timed rounds of rope skipping.
“I’ve been wanting to be a pro-boxer ever since I was 14 years old … now I’m 24 and chasing my dream.”
His path to success has seen him come down off the mountain to Nambucca Heads where he trains and boards with Sparra and his family.
“He’s doing well … he had a five and a half hour training session the other day, so today we’ll go bit easier,” Sparra said.
“On the weekend we headed to Taree so Danny could spar with some fresh partners.
“I tell the boys to train hard and fight easy, he’s doing well on his weight and he’ll be ready for this.”
Friday’s fight is also a warm-up for the big ticket Nambucca tournament Sparra is organising for March 5.
“It’ll be the first pro fight we’ve had here in 50 years, so that’s pretty exciting.”
