With these words, Member for Oxley Melinda Pavey declared the upgraded recycling centre at the Nambucca Waste Management Facility open on Tuesday.
“This $61,700 facility is your waste levies at work and means residents can recycle all those items such as used paint, old oils, globes and batteries,” Ms Pavey said.
“This is a sensible environmental initiative and I hope it encourages more people to dispose of their waste properly.”
Mrs Pavey was joined by Nambucca Shire mayor, Rhonda Hoban, who said that seeing the waste levy coming back to the community in the form of a free recycling service was good news.
“The centre is easily accessible, well-labelled and takes all those potentially harmful waste products, which might otherwise have entered the environment and impacted on natural systems and human health,” Rhonda said.
Midwaste coordinator Ali Bigg said the $465.7 million NSW Government ‘Waste Less Recycle More’ grant program had seen a network of centres developed across NSW.
“This facility is one of nine in the region - it’s exciting to see it open ... so we can advertise that it’s here and it’s free with the cost of processing being met by the NSW Government,” Ms Bigg said.
The centre will take the common low toxic materials that are currently collected in the Household Chemical CleanOut events. While these events will continue for the next few years, there will be a transition to fewer collections, taking only low volume, high toxicity materials.
The Nambucca Waste Management Facility, Old Coast Rd, Nambucca Heads, is open from 7.30am to 4.30pm seven days a week.
