Often was the jack caressed, and sometimes forcefully driven. as the best two sides of the tournament played out the entertaining decider.
The quality of bowls was remarked upon by the large crowd who stayed on for the final two hours of the three-day event.
The honours went 24-10 after 16 ends to a composite team skipped by Tuncurry’s Steve Harris over another geographically patch-worked side captained by onetime NSW bowler, Peter Foster from St John’s Park.
The winning Harris team included lead Greg Hogg, second Ross Cable (both Chester Hill) and third Matt Phillips.
Foster was supported by lead Roy Chatto (Lake Cargelligo), second Ron Meadows (Campbelltown) and third Phil Toy (Park Beach). This side had won every match – until the big one.
Sponsored by Geoff King Eastland at Macksville, the carnival attracted capacity fields from across the State for the Men’s Fours competition which was marking its 39th year.
Skipper Foster thanked the host Nambucca Heads club on a “sensational” tournament and paid credit to all of the other teams who at various times had produced “brilliant bowls”.
Team lead ‘Hoggy’ noted it was the seventh year he had travelled for the carnival as he held the event in such high regard.
One of the carnival organisers, Ken Rostron, said the bar, catering, greens and tournament volunteers had been outstanding.
While it had drizzled on Saturday, no play was lost, and Monday’s finals were blessed by perfect Nambucca weather.
