Award winning writer Robert Drewe will be the special guest at the official launch, where as well as the ribbon-cutting honours, he will discuss his life and work with Irina Dunn.
The launch commences the program of this year's Bellingen Readers and Writers Festival (BRWF) and will feature guest appearances by leading local authors and a welcome to country by Auntie Bea Ballangarry.
The new CCWC will be a hub for local writers and readers in the Coffs Harbour, Bellingen, Dorrigo and Nambucca regions. Activities will include a regular program of readings, book launches, workshops, writers in residence and writer school visits. The centre will also contribute to the coordination of the annual BRWF, ensuring its continued growth and sustainability into the future.
"The Coffs area has a great many writers and aspiring writers and readers' groups, and the centre will create a better-connected literary scene for the benefit of all writers in the region, whatever their stage of development," founder and Centre Coordinator Brian Purcell said.
"We invite anyone interested in being involved with the Centre, including becoming a member, to come along to the launch or contact us at the Centre. Membership benefits will include discounted entrance to workshops and special events, subscription to a monthly magazine, discounted book purchases and the chance to contribute to our new Coffs Write e-magazine," Mr Purcell said.
Robert Drewe was born in Melbourne and grew up on the West Australian coast. His first book of stories, The Bodysurfers, was published in 1983 and has become an Australian classic. His other prize-winning books include story collection The Bay of Contented Men, novels Our Sunshine, The Drowner and Grace and his multi award winning memoir The Shark Net. Robert Drewe also became, variously, a well-known columnist, features editor, literary editor and special writer on 'The Australian' and the 'Bulletin'.
