Then there’s the next generation of rising stars including Jayde Hill, Alina Tape and Sam Kete. Now 16-year-old Jamie Bekis can be added to that list.
Following in his idol’s (Hughes) footsteps and fast becoming ‘one to watch’, Jamie has been invited by the Darren Lehmann Cricket Academy (DLCA) to tour England next month and compete in 11 games over 19 days, against “first class county youth teams”.
“This is something I’d never expected,” Jamie told the Guardian.
“Especially at this age – I’m only 16. I’ve never even been overseas before – so that adds to the excitement.
“I don’t really know exactly what to expect – but it’s a chance to play in different conditions, on different grounds against quality players.
“The trip coincides with the Ashes tour, so because Darren runs the academy (and coaches Australia), hopefully we might get to meet the (Australian) team.”
This milestone follows a summer where Jamie has posted some cracking scores in both local and representative games: 184, 126 (in a 20/20), 118 and 93 not out.
Jamie was also named the shire’s Junior Sportsperson (male) of the Year.
The talented youngster first took to the pitch when he was eight years old in an Under 11s side in Newcastle. At age 10, Jamie’s family moved to Macksville.
Dad Tim said his son’s hard work over the years was paying off.
“I remember taking him back to Newcastle every weekend … just to play Under 10s cricket,” he said.
“He’s sacrificed a lot over the years to better himself – and now the rewards are coming.
“It’s something he is so passionate about - and we’re (family) so proud of him and the hard work he’s put in to get to this stage.”
As part of the tour, Jamie will be required to take part in a five-week pre-tour program of both skills and strength and conditioning to prepare for the schedule.
“They will structure the tour to what the Australian team does, from game plan right down to nutrition and exercises and recovery,” Jamie said.
He will also be sent to the SCG for a fitness test … all this, while still managing school work.
“It is hard to juggle sometimes and I do miss out on a fair few things … but I wouldn’t change any of it.”
