Having retold his incredible life story in the first book, the Valla-based writer has now branched out into humour, in Take it Easy.
Written in the euphemistic style of one of his literary heroes, Damon Runyon, Andrew opens his book with one of Runyon’s quotes: “I long ago came to the conclusion that all life is 6 to 5 against”.
Set in the mythical Newtown pub, The King’s Head, the story’s narrator and SP bookie, ‘Eggo’, who also doubles as the pub’s chook raffler, carries the plot with his indefatigably dry humour.
Eggo, as described by the author on the back cover blurb, is himself a World War II German Army deserter turned Polish partisan and now an Australian citizen with a colourful past and a questionable future.
“It was a lot of fun to write ... you see a situation which is a bit funny and then you can build and stretch it into a story,” Andrew said.
“As a retiree who after a bad accident is no good on the golf course or bowling green, writing is the ideal sport.
“I sit down and it just comes out ... it’s all there!”
Take it Easy will be officially launched on Wednesday, at the Nambucca Heads RSL Club from 4.30pm.
