Bureau of Meteorology New South Wales Regional Director, Mr Barry Hanstrum, said the forecasting models used by the Bureau of Meteorology are producing a range of scenarios.
“What we do know is that most of the forecasting guidance shows a low pressure system developing off the northern New South Wales coast, but we are not able to determine the exact position, timing and intensity of the system this far out,” Mr Hanstrum said.
“Early indications suggest the main impacts of intense rainfall and strong winds will be on coastal areas in the states north east including the Northern Rivers and Mid North coasts, with heavy falls also likely for southeast Queensland.
“Current guidance suggests that rain will increase this week, and peak between Thursday and Saturday.
"Further rainfall is likely for catchments that have already experienced flooding during last week’s severe weather event."
He said the Bureau was acutely aware of clean-up operations currently underway, and mindful of the impact further rain could have in these areas.
“The Bureau has briefed emergency services today, and will continue to hold regular briefings with NSW SES as the forecast firms up during the week.
"Forecasters will also continue to provide regular updates for the community through news media and social media channels, with the most comprehensive and up to date information available on the Bureau’s website.”
The public are urged to closely monitor the Bureau’s website, tune into the media and local radio, and listen to the advice of emergency services.
