After a heavy loss in all three grades against the Coffs Harbour Comets at the weekend, the Roosters will have another tough week on field when they face up against the Grafton Ghosts.
“The heavens opened up on Sunday, the sidelines were three inches under water – it was unbelievable,” first grade coach Peter Barrett said.
“Coffs had a bigger team all over the park, their backs were as big as their fowards. I thought we could get them with fitness, but their English imports revelled in the weather and they adapted to the conditions a lot quicker than us.”
Solitary Images photographer Les Gentle said he has a great deal of admiration for the Roosters efforts.
“I was watching from the sideline and believe imported talent is killing country rugby league,” he said.
“The Comets team was basically made up of imported players funded by a strong sponsor.
“The Roosters are all locals from the Nambucca Valley except one. Hard for them to match it against Coffs, but they deserve full accolades for supporting their juniors and bringing them through the ranks over time.
“I have really enjoyed the spirit that the Roosters display.
“All clubs should be following their lead and country rugby league will again grow.”
Looking to this weekend, coach Peter Barrett said Sunday will be a big day.
“The whole club are pumped to play the first game back home in over a year – there’s no worries getting any of them amped up for it.
“We’ve just got to start winning, we all know what we’re up against – but being with the home crowd, we’ll have more spirited sides on and after Sunday.”
Club secretary Steve Russo said he hopes “the whole town will turn out for this one”.
Under 18s kick off at midday at Coronation Park.
