Passionate committee members including president Paul Cue, and vice-president Brendan Goswell, were on hand to sign both returning and new members. The kids were looked after, with a free sausage sizzle and a kick-about on the bowling greens.
It was a successful exercise with most age groups filling quickly. However, as the club is required to nominate their teams to the North Coast association shortly, all interested players are strongly encouraged to register to avoid disappointment.
The season kicks off early with the senior men’s side travelling to Grafton this weekend to play Westlawn Tigers in the first round of the FFA Cup. It is a knockout game and one that will see many new combinations in the Strikers squad.
Having lost numerous experienced players to the Over 35s and to working commitments, the Strikers have welcomed new blood into the mix, including quality midfielders Brad Hodnett and Andrew Gaterell. Also rising through the ranks of the club’s local youngsters are: Lochy Paix, Lawson Tinmouth, Heath Jones and Aaron McIntosh.
This week’s game will see the team line up as a combined 11 for the first time this season. But if training sessions are an indication then it won’t take long for the Strikers to gel.
Up against a Premier League side, the Strikers will be considered underdogs - but it will be a good measure of where they are leading into the season and also the Challenge Cup in Nambucca Heads on March 21.
* Saturday’s game will be at Barnier Park, Junction Hill, with kick off at 3pm.
* To register for the Strikers visit myfootballclub.com.au, or look on Facebook for Nambucca Strikers Football Club. The registrar is Brendan Goswell.
