Described as “a mostly heroic saga of the epic travels of a World War II Baltic refugee to his new life on a mostly old continent”, the book traces the author’s childhood dodging bombs and Russian bullets, surviving the Dresden bombing and ending up in a refugee camp in Germany before eventually migrating to Australia.
His later travels in Germany, England, South Africa and Communist China are both intriguing and captivating.
His marriage to wife Jill made legal history in South Africa and once in Australia, his business enterprises have been inventive, including the locally-popular Valla Smokehouse.
In short, his life story is a humorous, entertaining, at times chilling and also jaw-dropping ride.
Launched recently in Valla, Greg Hamilton from Phoenix Press said Andrew had achieved in his first book what many authors take six books to accomplish.
“There is a simple narrative flow and down-to-earth communication - those who have read it say once they started reading, they found it difficult to put down,” Greg said.
