With good weather and a small surf, the conditions were perfect.
In consideration of the winter layoff, the races were over a three-quarter course although more races were run on Saturday for the younger crews. In this year’s competition, for the first time, the wearing of fluorescent singlets is mandated as a safety precaution. Again for safety reasons, helmets must be worn when required by the carnival referee.
The Macksville-Scotts Head reserves crew (pictured) of Keith McKay (sweep), Jake Russo (stroke), Rick Andrews, Evan Beeby and David Walsh came first at the end of the Saturday rounds but surprisingly didn’t make the final at the end of the Sunday rounds.
The 200-year-plus masters crew of Keith McKay (sweep), Butch Laverty, Steve Russo, Michael Coulter and Kendall Stirrat came second at the end of the Saturday rounds and were placed equal first at the end of the Sunday rounds.
It looks like the 200-year-plus division will be competitive in 2014/15 with Woolgoolga, Macksville-Scotts Head and Crescent Head trading places as first, second and third. Some practice in deep water starts will be a focus for the older blokes in their forthcoming training sessions.
Unfortunately the Macksville-Scotts Head Club was unable to field a ladies crew so the call goes out to any interested women who might be interested in surf life saving and fitness to provide some gender equity and female input.
