The child was digging in a sand dune on Terrace Beach, near Eden, when it collapsed on him about 2.45pm.
Paramedics treated him at the scene but he died at Merimbula Airport. He was in the process of being airlifted to Canberra Hospital.
3.50PM UPDATE: School holiday fun has turned into a nightmare for a 10-year-old boy's family following a sand dune collapse on the Far South Coast.
The boy is in a critical condition after a sand dune collapsed on him while he was digging at Terrace Beach, in Ben Boyd National Park, near Eden.
The accident happened about 2.45pm.
Ambulance paramedics attended and treated the child at the scene before he was taken to Pambula Hospital.
Inquiries into the incident are continuing.
3.30PM: The child has reportedly been rescued from Terrace Beach in Ben Boyd National Park. The Snowy Hydro SouthCare helicopter is being rerouted to Pambula hospital.
