This is a day of recognition of merchant officers and seamen who served Australia during times of war and who either paid the supreme sacrifice or whose lives were shortened due to wartime service.
During WW2 alone, some 19 merchant vessels were lost to enemy action along the NSW North Coast with the loss of some 200 personnel.
Australian merchant seamen have served in all conflicts in which Australia has been involved, including the Vietnam War.
Members of the Nambucca Valley Naval and Mariners Association will conduct a memorial service on Wednesday at 11am beside the public wharf in River St (west), Macksville.
Members of the public are invited to attend. For more information phone Roger Jones on 6568-3275.
