The case, which occurred in June, highlights the need for constant vigilance to keep the virus under control and keep both farmers and their horses safe and healthy.
Since its discovery Hendra virus has claimed at least four human lives.
Due to the nature of the virus, infected animals might not present consistent symptoms, putting owners and veterinary staff at risk if they do not follow stringent bio-security measures to protect themselves, even if there is no suspicion of the virus.
The release of a vaccine for Hendra Virus in 2012 brought welcome relief however it must be done every six months.
NSW Department of Primary Industries advises that vaccination is the single most effective way of reducing the risk of Hendra virus infection in horses and also the spread to humans, who are at risk following any high-level exposure to body fluids from an infected horse.
"Vaccinating horses is an important measure to prevent the spread of the virus and also provides a public health and workplace health and safety benefit,” a Departmental spokesman said.
Valley Rural and Pet Supplies is an advocate for equine care and nutrition and encourages vaccinations for all horses.
They are hosting an equine information night at the Coffs Harbour Race Club tomorrow, Thursday, from 6pm to help horse owners care for their animals.
