Hollywood actor James Garner, known for his parts in the original Maverick, The Rockford Files and The Notebook has died, aged 86.

Entertainment website TMZ reported that an ambulance was despatched to the actor's Los Angeles home on Sunday but he was dead when they arrived.
Garner's career spanned more than five decades, in both television and movies. His TV roles included Bret Maverick in the 1950s western-comedy series, Maverick, and Jim Rockford in the 1970s detective drama, The Rockford Files. Garner won an Emmy in 1977 for his role in The Rockford Files.
He also starred in more than 50 films, including The Great Escape in 1963, Murphy's Romance in 1985, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award and The Notebook in 2004, where he played the older version of Ryan Gosling's character. Garner appeared in the 1994 movie remake of Maverick, starring alongside Mel Gibson.
The cause of death is not yet know. Garner is survived by his wife, Lois, whom he married 14 days after meeting in 1956. They have a daughter Greta “Gigi” Garner and Garner also adopted Lois Clarke's daughter, Kimberly, from her first marriage.
