A PREFERRED option for the remediation of the contaminated antimony processing plant at Urunga has been chosen and will be presented to the local community next Thursday, May 29.

The chosen remediation method is for the contaminated waste to be removed from the wetland and then stored safely onsite in a containment cell, known as a ‘monocell’.
Bellingen Shire Council’s general manager, Liz Jeremy, said the council was enormously pleased to see this progress after such a long time.
“We have been working very closely with the Environmental Protection Agency and Crown Lands to find a solution to this problem,” Mrs Jeremy told the Guardian.
“This process will see the site rendered safe ... eventually it will be redeveloped and re-opened for passive recreation.”
At the meeting, NSW Soil Conservation Service project officer, Clayton Colmer, will explain the development of the preferred option, its environmental controls and extend an invitation for input/comment from the community on issues relating to the remediation.
Bellingen Shire Council is facilitating the meeting.
