The penalty came after the EPA received a complaint in February about noise from the sawmill.
The sawmill’s Environment Protection Licence permits the operation of the wood chipper between 7am and 6pm from Monday to Friday, and between 8am and 1pm on Saturday.
“In February, the EPA received a complaint alleging the timber mill had operated its wood chipper outside the times allowed by the licence,” EPA director North branch, Gary Davey said.
The EPA investigated and confirmed that the timber mill was operating its wood chipper from 6:30am.
“This was a breach of licence condition and in response, the company was issued a Penalty Notice and fined by the EPA,” he said.
Penalty notices are just one of a number of tools the EPA can use to achieve environmental compliance.
