The 15-year-old landed a 47cm cracker to win the Junior Bass NSW/ACT title, and a $400 voucher at a boat, camping and fishing store.
But the early signs weren’t encouraging for Chris as he and his family and friends tried the upper reaches of the Nambucca out the back of Bowraville.
“We were flicking hard bodied lures into the shadows and right near the snags and a friend got two flatties on the sand flats and then three small bass further up,” Chris told the Guardian.
“I thought what am I doing wrong, then whack,” as the Year 9 Macksville High student got ‘the one’.
The champion bass put up a good fight before being laid out on a brag mat and posing for a happy snap.
Chris said the voucher will be redeemed in part for a new rod to go with a Daiwa spin reel he picked up at Christmas.
And he’s looking forward to more tight lines over the Easter holidays.
