It wasn’t just a one-off for the group of 17 students in Surfing NSW’s Indigenous Surfing Program – they enjoyed 10 weeks of education with Munro who heads up the Trent Munro Surf Academy.
The 17 indigenous students - from years seven to 10 - were educated on the importance of assessing surf conditions, how to paddle correctly, sunsmart behaviour and how to negotiate waves.
All kids also completed Surfing NSW’s free CPR and board rescue course, Surfers Rescue 24/7. The course provides crucial training to assist in an emergency situation and could ultimately save a life.
“It has been an excellent 10 weeks of unforgettable laughs and smiles,” Munro said. “To see how much confidence they gained has been great and is exactly what this program is about. I have no doubt I will be seeing these kids at the beach this summer. A big thanks must go out to Community Builders and Nambucca Shire Council for their support also.”
Bowraville Central School’s head welfare teacher Rob Symonds described the program as a “great opportunity”..
“From the very first session we have had full attendance every Thursday. The program has been a way for them to re-engage with school and with their friends.
“The instruction has been outstanding. The activities; fun and engaging. The teachers; patient and professional. The students have been gaining confidence in the surf and are wanting to take up surfing as a weekend activity.”
