A MAN wanted by authorities following his escape from an institution in Sydney has been taken into custody following a high speed pursuit on the Pacific Highway north of Nambucca Heads overnight.
The 22-year-old man was detected speeding in a Holden Commodore by a Highway Patrol vehicle just south of Urunga at 11.35pm.
Failing to stop for the officer, the vehicle allegedly reached speeds of 160kmph in a 110kmph zone north of Urunga.
Coffs Harbour police were alerted and laid road spikes on the highway near the Englands Rd roundabout.
The driver was taken into custody after the front and rear passenger side wheels of the car deflated.
Checks found he was wanted by authorities following his escape from an institution at Concord.
Police said charges are pending following the results of a mental health assessment.
