THE PRESTIGIOUS Golden Sands Tavern Bowraville Cup is just around the corner, so ladies and gents it’s time to frock up and save those pennies.
The Cup is always a favourite day out for the Nambucca Valley and it’s on this Sunday; offering the chance to soak up some winter sun, have a punt on the ponies and catch up with friends.
This event is the Nambucca River Jockey Club’s biggest meet of the year, and this year more than $132,000 in prize money and trophies is up for grabs.
The Golden Sands Sky Gold Cup (1370m) will be the feature race of an eight race TAB Program, with $25,000 in prize money.
The Westlawn Finance Lightening Bend Handicap (1000m), again the traditional support race, will boast $17,000 in prize money.
Record prize money is on offer this year, as the Bowra Cup is the first race meeting of the new season in NSW to have an extra $5000 per race, so all supporting races are worth $15,000.
Last year’s Cup winner, Bondit, ridden by leading Northern Rivers jockey, Raymond Spokes – who grew up in Bowraville and attended Macksville High School – could be back to make it consecutive wins.
The Golden Sands Tavern Bowraville Cup fixture is always the feature event of the sporting calendar, and there will be all the usual activities, fashions on the field, live music and more.
It may not be quite the same scale as the Melbourne Cup, but ask locals and visitors and they'll tell you it's one not to miss.
Gates open at 10.30am – adults $10 and concession $8, under 16s free.
Free buses will leave the Valla Beach Tavern at 10.15am, the Nambucca RSL car park at 10.30, the Golden Sands Tavern at 10.45, Macksville post office at 10.50 and Scotts Head Bowlo at 10.30.
