NAMBUCCA Shire Council has said no to using social media sites like Facebook and twitter to engage with young people in the Valley.
Most councils have a Youth Advisory Committee undertaking a monitoring task on social media with input from the youth development officer, however the shire’s committee and its MySpace page
was abandoned some years ago due to of a lack
of interest.
Youth development officer Vicki Fernance said despite social media pages being powerful
internet tools and communication portals,
starting a Facebook page opens a range of resourcing and monitoring issues for council.
“At this stage, there is not an effective way of
monitoring what appears on a Facebook page by staff in council,” she said.
“The continual and regular monitoring is
necessary for them (the pages) to work
effectively and it would be essential that there be a number of staff doing this – and at this stage, the council does not have the resources.”
