This was the real gem in the mountain of information available at Tuesday’s T.H.E. (Technology Health Education) EXCHANGE at the Nambucca Heads RSL Club.
The event showcased the benefits of high speed broadband and for Nambucca resident Steph Lloyd it was an opportunity to ‘bring herself up to speed’ with the new information.
“Being here helped me to visualise how it all works,” Steph said.
“I also learnt that fibre will be coming to my door but not for about three or four years - I feel comfortable with that.”
Carmel Hong was amazed that Nambucca had been connected so early in the roll-out.
“We are so fortunate - the potential for better health and education services is wonderful, so too are the benefits for businesses,” Carmel said.
“And I was surprised to learn that outlying areas will be getting their satellite and wireless service before the fibre service arrives.”
NBN Co community services advisor, Ian Scott, confirmed that fixed wireless and satellite services Australia-wide were due to be completed by 2015, whereas the fibre rollout was a 10-year project.
“The fibre footprint will cover urban areas, towns with more than 1000 residents, but it stops around the end of the 50kph speed zone limit,” Mr Scott said.
Medicare Local e-health program officer Vicki Cheney was on hand to explain the advantages of eHealth records.
“The records provide a snapshot of your health history electronically,” Mrs Cheney said.
“They are entirely voluntary, cost-free and are personally controlled.
“Our populations are so mobile now and this is a way of accessing your health information, such as medication and allergies, no matter where you are in the country or the world.”
Another fascinating snippet gleaned from iinet’s NBN product manager, Rachael McIntyre, was that once the NBN rollout is complete, within 18 months the old copper wire network will be discontinued.
“The playing field will be completely levelled,” Ms McIntyre said.
* If you missed out on this week, it’s not too late - T.H.E. EXCHANGE will be at the Urunga C-Ex on Tuesday between 10am and 4pm.
