The game had generated a lot of interest throughout the Group as both teams were heading in undefeated.
It was tit-for-tat in the early stages with the Eagles scoring first to lead 6-0.
The Comets levelled soon after, but the celebrations were shortlived when the Eagles replied to take back the lead, 10-6.
Another try to the Comets followed to level the score, but Macksville weren’t going to give in, crossing again to take the lead 16-10.
The Eagles pulled further ahead scoring in the corner, giving Macksville a 20-10 lead.
In the dying stages of the half the Comets crossed for a converted try to reduce the lead to 20-16 at the break.
Macksville went to a 24-16 lead early in the second stanza with an 80-metre run by Ricky Morris – but that was the end of the Eagles’ scoring for the day.
As the half progressed the Eagles struggled to hold the ball and their frustration became apparent as they gave away silly penalties which Coffs Harbour capitalised on.
Four unanswered tries by the Comets, the last three in the final fifteen minutes of the game, saw the Comets run out winners.
Coffs Harbour clearly deserved their victory, but the Eagles showed in the first half they are capable of matching it with the Comets, and with more ball security they can hopefully turn this result around in the second round.
The reserve grade Eagles retained their place on the top of the ladder with a 26-20 victory.
This was a good win for the Eagles who continued with the strong form they have shown throughout the season so far, the forwards making good ground and the backs capitalising on their chances.
This weekend is a special occasion for the Eagles as they travel to Hennessy-Tape Oval for their annual Bowraville Challenge, this year facing off against the Orara Valley Axemen.
The Axemen have three grades this year so for the first time since this clash began the Eagles’ under 18s will be on show for the day, with their kick off at noon.
