A major police operation is underway near the Broadway Shopping Centre in central Sydney after shots were reportedly fired at an Armaguard truck.

Police have closed off Bay Street and a large number of officers have surrounded an Armaguard truck, parked outside the entrance to the shopping centre.

A police spokeswoman said a police operation was underway in the area. She could not immediately confirm reports that shots had been fired.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said paramedics had been called to the shopping centre. It was unclear if there were any patients.

More to come.
