Macksville could be losing another talented rugby league player to Queensland as Sam Miles shapes up for selection into the Broncos’ Under-20s side.
Not that Sam is worried. He has followed the Broncos since he was a little kid. To be able to play for them one day would be like living the dream, Miles said.
The talented 19-year-old former Macksville High student was a familiar face at Allan Gillett Oval, where he played for the Macksville Sea Eagles for three years, before moving north to pursue football after graduating.
For the past 12 months he has played for the Redcliffe Dolphins and is working on his selection into the Broncos Under-20s next season.
Though his future in football is looking exciting, Miles has not lost sight of his priorities.
“I would like to pursue footy professionally, if it works out, it works out.
“But uni is my main focus at the moment,” Miles said.
He has enrolled to study sports science next year.
In the short time Miles has played rugby league, he has accomplished more in the sport than he lets on.
After being selected for a rugby league development squad when he was still playing for the Sea Eagles, Miles went on to play in the Queensland Cup team, and played in the City vs Country squad in Woolgoolga last year.
“I love the challenge of it (rugby league) and all the mates you get,” Miles said.
However, he didn’t really show an interest for the sport until he started high school.
As a 13-year-old he started playing for the Bowraville Tigers, played for his school union team the Swampies, before taking up the field with the Sea Eagles.
But however far his football may take him, Miles still called Macksville home.
“I love coming home to Macksville, it’s quiet, laid back and all my mates are here,” he said.
