Nambucca Roosters lost only their second game for the season when they went down to Sawtell Panthers by two tries to five, in the grand final at Macksville.
It was a very disappointing result given that the team has so many talented players, however Sawtell was the better team on the day.
Once again the penalty count weighed heavily against the Roosters who had a player sin-binned in each half.
Unfortunately, the game ended about five minutes early, on a sour note, with emotions over-flowing and both teams, along with spectators, coming to blows.
Sawtell put the first points on the board with a converted try five minutes into the game, when they sent a kick down field and regathered.
Nambucca followed five minutes later when Mat Archer sent a cut-out pass to Jordan Hollis who ploughed over the line. Alex Hull converted to even the scores.
Sawtell scored their next converted try under the posts, which resulted, once again, from a regathered kick down field.
Nambucca were unlucky not to score next when they failed to ground the ball properly over the try line. Sawtell ran in another try before half time to make the score Sawtell 18, Nambucca 6.
The second half saw the Panthers score a converted try following a 40/20 kick, which put them in a great attacking position.
Nambucca missed another try when they knocked-on on the try line. The next points for Sawtell came from a penalty goal. Cameron Cohen scored a well deserved try for the Roosters, when he followed through on a kick through by Kyle Cohen.
Nambucca failed to convert. This brought the scores to Nambucca 10 Sawtell 26.
Sawtell sealed the game with their next converted try, which came after a penalty against Nambucca. The final score was Sawtell 32, Nambucca 10.
The all-in scuffle which concluded the game left a heavy cloud. Spectators also getting involved meant that full time was called a few minutes early.
It was a hard defeat for the boys who had improved and had built their team work throughout the season.
They seemed to have trouble finishing off their plays and the penalties against them took their toll.
