The Macksville Sea Eagles enjoyed a stunning return to form last weekend at Allan Gillett Oval when they defeated the Dunghutti Broncos by 72-12.
With both teams coming off losses from the previous weekend, and keen to get their season back on track, this was expected to be a tough game, but the Eagles opened the game in style and did not look back.
From the second tackle, Duane Button raced down the side-line and toed the ball ahead, with Peter Bula coming up in possession metres from the line.
Grant Collison found a rampaging Edward Vale-Tighe running on to the play the ball, and a quick pass gave Vale-Tighe the first try of the day, and the Eagles a 4-0 lead.
The next Sea Eagles’ charge saw Button go to dummy-half 20 metres out, then use his strength to carry three defenders over for the day’s second try. Michael Ronan converted and the Eagles led 10-0.
Jesse McEwen was the next to score for the Eagles, finishing off a good back line movement with a long run to the corner.
McEwen scored again soon after, starting his run well in his own half, kicking ahead and regathering to score in the corner to give the Eagles a 18-0 lead.
Rob Inglis from the Broncos halted the Eagles scoring run, and Kenneth Dixon converted the try to reduce the Sea Eagles lead to 18-6.
The last fifteen minutes of the half saw errors from both sides stall the scoring, but the Eagles still ran in two tries – the first to a rampaging Bobbie Jarrett off a good pass from James Collison, while McEwen ran on to a great long ball from Ronan, to score his third try of the day.
Ronan converted the try to see the half-time score-line read Macksville 28, Dunghutti 6.
Nigel Hookey opened the scoring for the Eagles in the second half, running 20 metres off a great pass from Luke Cartwright.
Soon after Cartwright ran on to a great ball from Grant Coleman to score a well-deserved try and give the Eagles a 38-6 lead.
The rest of the game saw the Eagles build on their lead, with Hookey showing the way to score three more tries while McEwen also scored four tries and Button ended up with a hat trick.
Ronan contributed a total of eight goals while Inglis ran in a second try and Dixon kicked a second goal for the Broncos to see the final score-line read Macksville 72, Dunghutti 12.
The Reserve grade clash saw the Eagles notch up their first win of the season when they ran out winners 34-8.
For the Eagles the forwards laid the foundations for this win, charging into the lighter Dunghutti opponents to lay the groundwork for the backs to work some magic.
Kyle Miller scored twice for the Eagles, while Peter Ling, Anthony Donovan, Cameron Greenup-Davis and Rhuben Blair scored a try each and Dwayne Donovan kicked two goals.
The Under 18s match saw a strong Dunghutti team prove too strong for the junior Eagles, running out winners by 40-20.
Anthony Donnelly, Kristian Kelly and Jimi Cutmore scored tries for the Eagles, while Tyler Doolan and Tom Trisley kicked a goal each.
This weekend sees the Eagles travel to Woolgoolga, to take on the Sea Horses in three grades.
This will be a particular test for the Eagles first grade squad, given Woolgoolga played in last year’s grand final and are undefeated so far this season.
The Sea Eagles would like to wish the Oxley Pioneers Under 18 squad all the best for this Friday’s Country Championship final and particularly their two representatives Will Ghilotti and Kristian Kelly.
