While the VB Mid Group 2 rugby league competition won’t begin till the last weekend of March, the Macksville Sea Eagles kick off their season on Saturday when they head to Forster to compete in a sevens tournament.
Eagles’ coach, Shayne Cantrill has picked a strong squad, featuring speed and youth. This too will be the formula for the club’s regular season.
Despite their youth the Eagles’ squad will be
experienced, with the core of last year’s first grade,
complimented by some boys from last year’s successful under 18s – and some others new to the Eagles.
The following weekend sees the Eagles return to the
13-a-side game at Allan Gillett Oval, where the club will have its first trial match of 2012, hosting Woolgoolga.
This will be a busy month for the Eagles, with the
centenary committee having organised a seven-a-side cricket competition for March 11 at Thistle Park.
Entries will be accepted on the day, and any money raised will go to the centenary celebrations.
In other club news, the Group 2 general committee hope to organise a Women’s League Tag Competition for the coming season, to be played as part of the clubs’ regular Sunday games.
The Eagles are keen to hear from any girls or women in the district interested in taking part.
Prospective players, who will not need to tackle in this game, can call club secretary Bill Richardson on 6568-2144, or come to the Eagles’ training nights at Allan Gillett Oval on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 o’clock.
