Nambucca squash championships show off up-and-coming talents

29 Oct, 2009 04:00 AM

Nambucca Heads Squash Club is currently holding its annual club championships and the squash in the preliminary rounds were nothing short of spectacular.

The men’s C-grade is being strongly contested by a group of young, up-and-coming players.

The younger players have paid no attention to the official pecking order and have been playing well above their weight.

Lucas Sewell and Troy Pascoe had a huge battle where Troy pulled out all sorts of tricks to pull off an upset win.

Lucas won’t be caught off-guard again if these two eventually meet in the final.

The men’s B-grade is split in two. The top half of the grade is full of talent and the bottom half is filled with bravado. The two players with most bravado are Garry O’Connor and David Mazoudier who had a 90-minute match that was simply spectacular.

David blasted what would normally be winner after winner, only to see the ball returned with interest.

David threw everything he had at Garry and he just threw it straight back.

While these two certainly ‘talk the talk’ they proved that they can also ‘walk the walk’.

In the women’s A-grade, Vanessa Chapman and Miranda Blackford will be vying for the right to meet the all-conquering Lauren Coony in the final.

Lauren looks to be unstoppable but the young guns will not let her have the A-grade title without a fight. The sub-junior event was worth the price of admission alone.

This event is open to all players under 12-years of age and allows the beginner level youngsters to experience tournament style matches.

This event proved to be the most popular with spectators who were in awe at the skill, tactics and sportsmanship displayed by these rising stars.

The preliminary rounds left the crowd without any doubt that squash is alive and well at the junior level.

These young players have got talent to burn.

A full report on the results of the club championships will be included in next week’s Guardian.
