Archers eye off top prize

29 Oct, 2009 03:00 AM

For several years, Nambucca Heads has played host to more than 200 archers as they compete for national titles.

The 3D Archery Association of Australia (3DAAA) has meets throughout the year, working up to the final weekend of competition, to be held at Nambucca Heads on November 14 and 15.

The course will be set out with various 3D targets in the shape of animals, with points accumulated by hitting various parts of the target.

As well as the national competition throughout the two days, the top performers from throughout 2009 will be squaring off for the Shooter of the Year awards in the various categories.

The different categories range right through the different age groups, from cubs to juniors, and adults, men and women.

Special guest pro shooter Darrin Christenberry from the US will be taking to the course during the weekend’s competition to take on the best 3DAAA talent.

Christenberry, who represents Mathews bow manufacturer, will also be giving a talk for local shooters on Saturday night.

A presentation night will then be held on Sunday night for national competitors.

The best performers from the 3DAAA championship will be eligible to shoot in the world 3D meet, to be held in the US next year.

Shooters from throughout NSW, Victoria and Queensland are expected to attend the meet, with some coming from as far as Western Australia and South Australia.

As well as the visiting shooters, there will be some local talent on display, with about five Nambucca Valley archers expected to show off their skills.

Among them will be 15-year-old Ebony Parker, pictured right, who will be competing in the Youth Female division, against archers aged between 13 and 17-years.

Ebony first picked up a bow aged five and has been travelling around this season, notching up a few wins around the different courses.

While Ebony would not be competing for a Shooter of the Year title due to missing various competitions during the year, the Nambucca High School Year 10 student said she hoped to record some good results in the annual competition.
