Young golfer needs no help on greens

14 Jan, 2010 09:50 AM
Saturday’s golf at Nambucca Island Golf Club attracted 130 players for the stableford event with 29 visitors making up the field. One such visitor was knee-high-to-a-grasshopper but showed the field he was no slouch on the golf course.

All the way from Eaglehawk in Victoria down Bendigo way, young Lloyd Needs, playing off a handicap of 32, took the event with a round of 42.

When asked what he liked about the course, he said it was the grass – because back in Eaglehawk they have been playing off the dirt and the only place they have grass is the tee and the greens.

Lloyd said it was great to be able to chip off the grass as they cannot do that at home.

Following young Lloyd in the runners-up spot was Eddy Penrose with a round of 41 playing off a handicap of 8. Eddy said, with tongue-in-cheek, they should not let kids the size of Lloyd compete.

Francis Restuccia from The Coast course can count himself unlucky to lose in the countback from Eddy as he recorded 20 for the back nine with Eddy having 21. Francis was disqualified on Thursday after a good round when he changed his handicap, so Saturday was some constellation.

Next to great the judge was Blake Gamble with a round of 40 while playing off a handicap of 11 these days.

‘Play’s of the day’ were taken out by Geoff Bush and Dave Hansen.

Geoff got a hole-in-one on the 15th, unfortunately for Geoff it was not the pin hole but the garbage bin beside the sixteenth tee. Playing partners told us it went of like an explosion with the bottles being smashed, I did present him with a mounted ball after the game, but you will have to ask him for the details.

Dave Hansen usually likes to have a chat and was given the ‘hurry up’ at the end of the 16th hole, this appeared to unnerve him and as result his tee shot on the 17th hit the wire fence, bounced off playing partner Drew Glasson’s shoulder and into the water hole on the 11th.

Up to this point Dave had 37 points and his day was over as far as scores were concerned.

Pins for the round went to Francis Restocked, Eddy Penrose, Mick Hamilton. Art Hooykaas took home the pizza prize, much to the displeasure of Stu Johnston and Dave Ogilvy.

Money shot was taken out by Geoff Poole after a bit of whinge and win. Ball rundown for the round 35c/b and the CCR recorded at 68.

Thursday’s round saw a field of 146 player’s with some 47 visitors taking part.

The field was split into two divisions with division one being 0-19 and division two from 20-up.

Taking out division one was Paddy Byrne playing off (13) with a round of 40 points from Rod Hardy (12) 39 points.

Next in a countback was Adam Woods (4) from Sawtell club and recording 22 on the back nine holes with 38 as did Alvin Rapley (19) twenty on the back and Chris Ferris (13) had 18 on the back nine holes.

Division two was taken out by Rupert Mullen (24) with 41 points from Trevor Peck (20) 40, Bruce Power (27) 39 won the countback from TJ Welsh (25) Bruce 22 on the back with TJ recording 18.

Poor ‘Peckie’ cannot take a trick even with the voucher and the money shot he was still behind on the day as his playing partners are known to have a side bet or two during the game.

Nearest-thepins for the day went to Brad Fortescue, Paul Maxwell, Paddy Byrne, Kay McGoldrick and Dave Trickett.

Ball rundown went to 35 c/b and the CCR was recorded at 68.

All events for the coming week will be stableford while we cater for our visitors.
