Visitors crowd island greens for medal

05 Aug, 2009 04:17 PM
August monthly medal was contested by 118 golfers.

With honours up for grabs in A, B and C-grades, all players were keen to do well in the sponsored event. The Leagues and Sports Club should be well pleased with the turnout.

Plenty of visitors from Mudgee, Parkes, Ballina, Grafton and Mullumbimby helped to make up the field, along with plenty of neighbouring courses.

Having the fifth hole out of play due to the renewal of the bunker and approach to the green, the scorers had their work cut out amending score cards.

Playing very good golf at the present, Stephen Ball took out the A-grade with an amended score of 77/67 from Alex Freeman 72/68 with the best gross for the round going to Brian Burns with a 72 also.

For B-grade we had 35 golfers contest with Dennis Tobin coming out on top with a good round of 80/67. Next in the grade was ‘Snowy’ Freeman with a round of 87/70.

Best gross went to Bernard Creighton with an 85.

Contesting C-grade, 55 players handed cards in, with Stephen Smith coming out on top with a round of 89/67.

He was chased home by Denis Newling (Fox Hills) 88/69, with the gross for the grade going to D Wilson, with a round of 90 in a countback from five other players, Dane Hamilton-Giggins, Barry Nicholson, Josh Barnes, Kev Burns (Mudgee) and Ray Shelly.

Pins for the day went to John Morgan, Reg Hoade and Nathan Smith. Josh Barnes took home the pizza prize with Paul Mulvenna pocketing the money shot at the eighteenth.

Ball rundown went to 73 c/b with a CCR worked at 69.

Dolphin Days held every month are normally well patronised of a Thursday, but for some unexplained reason we could only attract a field of 87.

Making the most of the perfect conditions was Rick Barlow with a score of 43 points after having a wipe on the 17th hole.

Heaven help us when Rick gets around with no wipes on the score card.

Next to greet the judge was Neville Wearing with a round of 42.

Nev has been going backwards more than forward of late so it is good to see him turn it all around.

Third on the podium was Tony Flear with a round of 40 points, just to pip Keith Elphick with a 39.

Pins went to Phil Day, Thomas Wattison, Dane Hamilton-Giggins,and Peter Miller with Stephen Ball getting the money shot at the last hole. Ball rundown went to 33c/b.

Play-of-the-day was awarded to Kel McGoldrick after his shot on the 13th hole finished in the toilet. All agreed that a free drop was in order and he should take relief while in such a spot.

Some of the locals will miss out on the weekend rounds for the week of golf.

We have been pestering members to fill in a nomination form for most of the year in the upcoming Caltex Challenge.

Times are still available for early in the week on the Tuesday and Wednesday with limited space on the Thursday round.

As always Golfest is proving very popular for the last week of August.

This coming weekend will be a stableford round with scores counting in the Shot Gun Shoot Out. Those interested should enter as prize money will be around the $800 mark.
