Throughout the past eight days the golf course has hosted some 1084 games of golf for our week of golf tournament starting with the veterans on the previous Sunday working up to the Caltex Challenge this past Sunday.
Steve Barnes held an all-schools challenge that catered for 10 schools in the area from as far down as Camden Haven, with 82 players taking part.
Two master strokes for the week belong to Aden Lovez with a hole-in-one on the 15th, and Norman Ross in scoring an eagle three on the second hole, a 485 metres par five.
Saturday and Sunday are run as separate events that combine into the Caltex Challenge over the 36 holes that becomes the main focus for the weekend.
Division-A winner for the ladies with a score of 74 was Kerry Naylor. In Division-B, Christine O'Brien took the trophy with a total of 75.
Scratch winner was Maxine Townsend (41) with Denise Paluch (34) runner-up.
For the men’s trophy, Brian Burns was the winner of A-division with 70 c/b while young-gun golfer Josh Barnes took out the B-division with 77. Men’s scratch went to Geoff Harvey 57 from Michael Coutman 55 c/b.
In the Sunday event Lori Smith with a round of 39 c/b finished best, with Deb Ford in the runners-up
position followed by Lyn Grose 35 c/b from Patricia Whitty of Bermagui.
Taking out the men’s trophy was Michael Parker with a round of 40, from Chris Swan 39, followed by Paul Mulvenna 37 and Richard Thomas of Nelson Bay club with 36c/b.
Nearest-the-pins for the round went to Carol Shields (Sawtell), Sue Oakey (Waratah), Kathlene Burkett (Caboolture), Les Kable (Lithgow) Alex Freeman, Les Mohr, with Jack Guggrty getting to take home the pizza prize.
Ball rundown for the day went to ladies 30 c/b and the men’s 31c/b.
Saturday’s round with 131 visitors again taking part to make up a maximum field of 206.
Finding herself in the top position was Lyn Helmers (Maitland) 38c/b points from Kay Rose also 38, from Beryl Morrison 36 and Joy Dickson (Kiama) 35.
Taking out the men’s was Phil Day with around of 39 c/b from Paul Anicich (Nelson Bay) with Paul Maxwell 38 and Rod Robertson 37.
Pins for the round went to the following players: Maxine Townsend, Lesley Buxton, Narelle Delaney, Ian Thomson (Wyong) Robert James (Sugar Valley) Alex Freeman, and Michael Coutman getting the pizza hole.
The ball rundown for ladies 31c/b and men 33c/b. for both days the course rating for men was at 69 while ladies remains at 70.
Last Friday the course was taken over for the running of the all schools challenge with the following results after taking the best three scores of each team into account from the stableford format: Coffs Harbour High with 118 points and represented by Billy Irvine, Aaron Gilvear, Joseph Whalan, Cameron Jones, Michael Hall and Mathew McEwan.
Runners-up in the challenge went to Bishop Druitt College Boambee with representation from Brad Connor, Sagi Wiguna, Aden Lovez, Tim Hyland, Ashley Munro and Tema Wiguna with 114 points.
Individual winner was Nick Thomas 45 points runner-up Mathew McEwan on 43 points with Luke Feltis of John Paul College, for the girls Vienna Schoeffel came out on top, with nearest the pins going to Nick Thomas and Sagi Wiguna.
Longest drive was taken out by Alex Freeman of John Paul College in the 0-18 division while Silas Robbins Nambucca High took the 19 to 36 division. Girls was won by Vienna Schoeffel of Bishop Druitt College. Overall Gross winner went to Aden Lovez with a round of 70.
