On Wednesday (14th) Nambucca Heads Island Golf Course ladies played a single Stableford event. There were 37 starters and the day was sponsored by Ruth Blanch.
For those interested, the Stableford system was developed by Dr. Frank Barney Gorton Stableford (1870–1959) to deter golfers from giving up on their round after just one or two bad holes.
It was first used informally in Wales in 1898, and first used in competition at Wallasey Golf Club in England, in 1932.
I don’t know whether Deb Gersbach (27) had any bad holes in her round or not, but if she did she was clearly undeterred, finishing the day overall winner with a spectacular 41 points.
Lyn Grose (20) was the division one winner on a countback from Glenys Thompson (21) on 36 points.
Division two runner-up was Lyn Vidler (32) with 36 points.
Division three winner was Ann Antcliff (35) on a countback from runner-up Betty Stockham (33) with 32 points.
Nearest-the-pins on the seventh hole jackpotted for division one.
In division two, Sally Welsh picked a good day to shoot straight, picking up four balls for her shot.
Division three went to Ann Antcliff with Deb Gersbach finishing off a great day by taking the all-in on the 18th hole. The ball rundown went to 31 points.
Well done to Laurie Smith and Kay McGoldrick, who made it all the way through to the knockout final. Congratulations to Kay who was the winner on the day.
