Rain takes golf honours

11 Feb, 2010 01:30 PM
Rain took honours at the golf course this week. With a rain-affected course for each day, fields were down with Island Sunday cancelled altogether.

Star Hotel, Macksville, sponsored our monthly medal round on Saturday with a good turnout given the conditions. The 72 hardy souls, desperados, or golfing fanatics, hit-off in the trying conditions. Two thirds returned cards, with the other third giving up before they could finish the round.

Even with the rain at its worst during the morning ,we had some good scores in C-grade.

Norm Sims showed us what can be done if you stick with it and returned a round of 85/61, another to have a good round in this grade was Rick Barlow 85/64, somehow Rick always seems to be able to produce the goods when it matters most. Mick Hamilton rounded of the best scorers in the grade with a gross of 93.

Players in the last groups received the better conditions for the round with only the one brief shower to contend with, and it showed up in their scores with the last three taking out A and B grades.

A-grade went to Roger Waters with a round of 76/64 with playing partner Drew Glasson in the runners up position with a round of 82/70. Rounding off the winners in A grade we had Steve Cumming with a gross of 82.

In the B-grade John Morgan made a dash from work to start in the last group with a good result of 81/66 enough to win the medal from Denys Tobin who finished with a round of 82/69. Rounding off the winners for the grade was John Nebauer with a gross 86.

Nearest-the-pins proved very

difficult as only C grade collected with A and B not making the green Geoff Bush being the receiver . Pizza hole went to John Slade while John Morgan also picked up the money shot to round off his day.

When asked how he played so well John’s reply was “don’t the last group always win”, the comment accepted in the manner it was given.

Ball rundown for the round went to 77 c/b and the CCR recorded at 69.

Rain also effected Thursday’s round with just the 63 starters, those who hit off later in the day received the better conditions.

As a result Terry Johnson finished with the winners voucher and 40 points in the stableford round.

Rod Fussell (Urunga) came home next with the best of the 39 point scores, carding 24 on the last nine holes to pip Wayne Purcell who recorded 23 on the same nine holes.

Another four player finish with 39 points and can count themselves pretty stiff with Derek Wynn 21, Brian Burns 19, Uri Ylinen 19 along with Adam Partridge all in the running for the third place voucher.

Mark Coony, Daniel Glasson, Alf Rose,Chris Ferris and Col Edmonds all took out nearest-the-pins with Dave McGilvray (Urunga ) taking out the money shot.

CCR for the round turned out to be 67 with the ball rundown going to 35c/b.

Monday was a small field with the day being a benefit for the Moxons, Peter with 41 points won the men’s while Jean took out the ladies with 33 points in the men’s and ladies single stableford.

This Saturday is the qualifier for the singles knockout, with the top 32 players contesting the knockout event that will run over five rounds to find the winner.

From last Saturday’s round we have kicked off the eclectic for this year, and that will run for all stroke rounds played of a Saturday. Nambucca Heads newsagency have agreed to sponsor this years event and we are pleased to have them aboard along with Nambucca Sports and Leagues Club who will sponsor the singles knockout event.

Thanks go out to all our new sponsors especially the Star Hotel who have agreed to sponsor all of the medal rounds this year.

More on our sponsors as we move through the program during the year.
