Rain dampens golfers weekend

11 Mar, 2010 12:17 PM
With about 125 mm of rain since the start of the month, our course has become pretty soggy with little or no run, and pulling a cart around is a real chore.

Even so there is always at least one who has a day in the groove so to speak and all comes together for the a win.

Saturday’s monthly medal round sponsored by the Star Hotel Macksville was no exception with 94 players taking on the course and the A-grade medal going to Garnie O’Brien with a round of 76/66 a pretty good effort given the conditions.

Following Garnie we had five players on 70 net with the countback going to Geoff McCann 82/70, from Garry Swain (Urunga), Troy Eddy (South West Rocks), Terry Johnson, and Graham Weary.

As a result Garry Swain took out the best gross for the grade with an 80.

In B-grade the honour went to Rod ‘Robbo’ Robinson with a round of 87/69 to be followed by four players with a net 70 score. Dennis Ashton finishing with the better countback score of 83/70 after a front nine, that at the fourth hole he may have been tempted to give it all up as a result of wet bunkers not to his liking. Another Denys in the form of Tobin took out the Gross with a 83 also. Dave Rosser and Neil Duffus were the other players to record a net 70.

Minor grade was well won by Dick Olive who had a day in the sun so to speak with a score that read 87/68, Dick would be justly pleased as he has been off the scene with an illness for sometime, and is just finding his way again.

Three players in C-grade also came in with a net 70 the best in the countback being Chris Swan 89/70 from Geoff Bush 89/70 and Rick Barlow 89/70. The three may need to be swabbed and sent to B-grade with the inscription “never to return again”.

Nearest-the-pins for the day went the way of Troy Eddy (South West Rocks) Ken Summerville, Terry Johnson won the pizza shot with Paddy Byrne taking out the money shot. Ball rundown to 74 c/d and the course rated 69 for the day.

As all stroke rounds will be part of our “Eclectic” sponsored by Nambucca Newsagents, most players are keen to be a part of the contest as someone in each grade will reap the benefits later in the year.

Taking the honour for the round on Thursday’s two-ball aggregate stableford, were Ken Summerville and Alex Freeman with a 75,and a 41 back nine over John Hall and Rick Barlow 39 score on the back.

Following was the pairing of Wayne Purcell and Drew Glasson with 71 and Barry Morrison and Aaron Cattanach 70.

Pins in the round went to Neville Wearing, Maxine Townsend, Roy Louis, Ken Nicholls, and Aaron Cattanach taking out the money shot. Ball rundown for the day was 68 c/b.

Sunday's round of 4BBB Mixed attracted a field of 58 with the result going to Lennox and Carmichael with a score of 42 points.

Ron and Anne Toovey of Bagara Queensland took out the runner up spot with a score of 40 to get the nod over the Hopkins, John and Fay who will represent in the Keno qualifier later in the year along with Uri and Eila Ylinen, Lyn Grose and Les Mohr, with Des and Maureen Fraser as a reserve.

Nearest the pins for the round went to Eila Ylinen and Bernie Dugdale .

With the round being the presentation of the Eric Pratt perpetual trophy.

This Saturday will be the first round of the Glen Crow sponsored Top Gun Shoot Out that will run from now until November with all our Saturday single stableford games.
