After backing themselves for a good round by entering the Top Gun Shoot Out before Saturday’s round, John Hopkins and Dennis Ashton both figured in the proceedings after rounds of 44 to ‘Hoppy’ and Dennis with a round of 40.
Winning the day on Saturday, Hoppy, would be still thinking of the lost opportunity on Thursday where he had the chance to win but with a last three holes of one wipe one, costing him any chance of a victory.
Playing partners revealed that the shakes took over on the last hole on Saturday again, but he had enough score to win the day.
Coming home runner-up from the field of 100 starters was Neville Wearing, playing off 36 handicap he returned 41 points, with Barry Morrison 40 points in a count-back from Dennis Ashton, Barry 21-17-8, while Dennis had 21-16-8.
Barry would be dirty on himself for the two wipes in his round, and could only wonder what may have been.
Pins for the day went to Don Lavery, Bruce Berry, Rod Hardy, and Ashley Weaver with two.
David Ogilvy won the pizza hole with the money shot going to Dane Hamilton-Giggins. Ball run-down went to 35 c/b for the round.
Thursday’s round was surprisingly poor with only 76 starters, which included !four visitors.
Showing a real return to form was Don Atkinson with a round of 41 points, playing of a handicap of 27. Don didn’t have it all his own way as Michael Lee and Donny Wills also recorded scores of 41.
Don Atkinson 21-13-5, Michael 20-15-6, Donny Wills 19-12-5. Donny Wills would be lamenting the wipes on the 5th and 16th holes. Robert Coneybeare, Paul Maxwell, and John Hopkins all recorded 40-point rounds.
Good to see one of our older members in Dermot McDermott come in with 39 points after his comeback a couple of weeks ago.
Ball run-down for Thursday was again 35 c/b with pins going to Geoff Harvey, Uri Ylinen, Ashley Weaver two, Campbell Secombe the pizza hole and Rob Walker (Wallacia) the money shot.
Saturday’s round also found a changing of the guard when young James Weimer took on Stuart Johnston in the men’s knockout and came up trumps on the 18th hole. The win has assured James a place in the final.
This Saturday another round of stableford and another change for entry into the Top Gun Shot Out. At this stage players would only need a score of 39 to qualify for a spot in the final thereby at least getting your money back with a small dividend.
