‘Golfest’ draws in record crowd for 1,300 games in eight days

Our biggest golfing week, promoted as ‘golfest’, has passed with record numbers achieved over the eight days of the tournament.

Starting with the veterans, as I reported last week, we had a field on Sunday of 161 players. On Monday, with a little rain about the field, players fell off to 116.

Tuesday the official start to golfest a field of 184 players in the men’s and ladies single stableford round.

Teams were at capacity for Wednesday, which had 208 players on the course. This number was topped on Thursday with 212 players in the single stableford.

Friday saw the course taken over by schoolchildren and 60 students fought it out for the major prize of $200.00 in stationary, for their school, plus individual prizes that was provided by local pro Steve Barnes.

Come Saturday and Sunday the 36-hole event, sponsored by Macksville Caltex, had a field of 178 players each.

Proving to be the top gun of the weekend, Justin Ely (Tanilba Bay) recorded two round off scratch of 67

(36-31) . Ever reliable Brian Burns was runner-up with 58.

With the women’s round Joyce Lawrence (Sawtell) scored 41 points from Lyn Hobson (Wauchope) on 38c/b.

Overall division one nett winner for the men was Ted Beaton with 75 points and in the division two (19-36 h/c) Barry Elliott of Nelson Bay finished with 83 for the two rounds.

Division one winner, in the ladies’ nett, went to Beverly Smith (Coffs) with 66 points and division two (23-45 h/c) was taken out by Sally Welsh on 76 c/b.

Saturday results for men’s

competition, in their respective order, was Barry Elliott (Nelson Bay) on 45, James Hodge (Terrigal) on 43, Derek Wynn on 42 and McGoldrick on 41c/b.

The women’s winners were Susan Oakey (Waratah) on 37c/b, Faye Hopkins on 37c/b, Gersbach on 37 and Patience Mohr on 36c/b.

Pins for the round went to Phil Waugh (Wauchope), Ted Beaton, Lyn Major (Coffs) and Marchelle Nichols (Coffs).

Ball rundown for the men went to 35c/b and the women to 33c/b.

The men’s Sunday competition winners were Les Mohr on 42, Bernie Dugdale on 40, Neil Duffus on 39c/b and Brian Pearson (Tallwoods) on 39.

Ladies winners were Penny Buckland on 40, Faye Hopkins on 38, Patience Mohr on 37 and Diane Day on 36c/b.

Pins for the round went to Neil Gavin (Wauchope), Colin Brett (Oberon) and Rodney Robertson, and in the women’s round pins went to Mary Mahar (Tamworth), Marchelle Nichols (Coffs) and Lyn Kelly (Wauchope). Ball rundown for men 33c/b ladies 32 even.

Single stableford winners for men were Uri Ylinen on 46, Chris Stone on 45, Graham Ball (Crescent Head) on 44 c/b and Peter Farrell on 44.c/b.

The ladies single stableford winners were: Gay Tapp (Kiama) on 42, Chrystal Freeman (South West Rocks) on 41, Faye Hopkins on 40c/b and Pam Walker (Shelly Beach) on 40.

Pins for the round went to Tony Fuller, Keith Elphick, Allen Neems (Sussex Inlet), Christene Dickson (Port Macquarie), Lyn Gross and Lisa Satinen (Grange).

Wednesday’s results for the team’s event saw Vince and Rhonda Brabat (Shelly Beach), with Robyn and Peter Ray (Tuggerah Lakes) win on 103 points.

Gwen Maxwell, Dorothy Bunyan, Janet Yager and Anne Antcliffe followed on 100 points. Behind them was Eilla and Uri Ylinen with John Hall and Lisa Sutinen for 99 points on a c/b.

Missing out on the combined group of 310 years, and doing very well for themselves, Trevor and Gwen Eichmann, with Jack Guggrty and Mary Peachey.

Pins for the round went to Lance Sykes (Port Macquarie), Allen Ridgewell (Wauchope), Denise Paluch and Shirley Willis. Ball rundown went to 91c/b.

Tuesday’s single stableford winner for the men were Bart Helmers (Maitland) on 43, Colin Freeman (South West Rocks) on 42, Michael Dodd (Charlestown) on 41 and Ian Patterson (Nelson Bay) on 40c/b.

The ladies winners were Susan Oakey (Waratah) on 40c/b, Lea Simacek on 40, Sally Welsh on 37 and Chrystal Freeman (South West Rocks) on 36.

Pins for the round went to Vince Brabat (Shelly Beach), Mario Suprano (Waratah), Warren Noble (Nelson Bay), Patricia Lumley (Coffs), Margret Bateman (Port Macquarie) and Sharon Leeson (Coffs).

Congratulation are in order for James Ryce, for his hole in one on the fifth hole last Tuesday and Peter Farrell for an eagle two on the 6th.

This is James second hole, since 1996.

Throughout the week, we have been host to almost 90 different golf clubs and staged 1,300 games of golf.
