Rainee and Barry McDonald sponsored a four-ball-best-ball stableford at Macksville Golf on Saturday, February 20.
Six early groups of locals and about 16 visitors had no trouble in completing their rounds in perfect conditions.
No so for the eight who hit off in perfect conditions from 10.30am.
With just two holes to complete their front nine and to shelter in the clubhouse, the heavens opened.
The rain pelted down and eight miserable figures were absolutely drenched. There was no suggestion that they could dry off in the clubhouse and wait for some respite.
Those following were able to do so, and the winning two were John Fortescue and his grandson Tyler Welsh, with 45 points. Their first nine was about average with seven two pointers and a par by John for three points and a par for Tyler for four points on the ninth. Tyler really hit form on the back nine for 24 points. His highlights came with consecutive pars for eight points on 14 and 15.
Jim Wilkes also partnered his grandson, Clint Lavender, who was runners up with 44 points. Young Clint only lost one shot for his win last week.
They got off to poor start with just three points from three holes but from there, Clint had 16 points despite a miss for 22 points on their back nine. As Clint faltered on the back nine, Jim came to the rescue and they combined well for 22 points.
Brad Fortescue and Harry Andrews won the front nine with 23 points. Brad hit great shots to birdie with seventh and eighth holes.
Stan Young and Peter Bryant combined very well to win the back nine with 24 points. Individually, they had 14 and 19. Stan finally hit form on 17 and 18 to have three points on each.
The sponsors gave extra balls for nearest-to-pin shots and long drives.
Nearest-to-pin shots were hit by Brad Fortescue, Allan Clarke, Tony Adams (twice), Paul Donges and Clint Lavender.
Long drives were hit by Geoff Harvey, Jim Wilkes and Brian Brabant.
This Saturday, golfers will contest a par event. In the starter’s chair will be Rod Curtis. Do not forget championships begin on March 5. Saturday’s golf will be sponsored by Yarra Steel Homes.
