Golf day dramas at Nambucca course

21 Jan, 2010 04:00 AM

With all things equal you have to wonder why the course plays easy one day and hard the next...

In Thursday’s rounds scores were all very good, so a course rating of 67 was posted for the day’s play. Come Saturday, the same conditions applied and the course itself in superb condition, but the

rating was posted at 69.

It was not as if we had howling winds and rain or any other great differences, but for some unknown factor scores became harder in Saturday’s round, maybe it has something to do with the weekend.

With 112 men teeing off on Saturday in the stableford event, Dane Hamilton Giggins (17) came in best with a round of 40 points. Also playing off 17 handicap, Lauchie Woodgate finished in the runners-up spot with a round of 39 points.

Next in with a round of 38 (27) Art Hooykaas took the prize in the countback from Rod Hardy (12) Eddie Penrose (7) and Peter Moxon (13), Art recorded 23 on the back nine holes while the others all had a 20 point back nines. Three player finished on 37 points P Mulholland (South West Rocks) John Sheehan (Urunga) and Peter Dawe.

Seven players equalled the par with rounds of 36 Blake Gamble, Chris Sargent, Alvin Rapley, Rick Barlow, Stuart Hughes (New South Wales), Rob Coneybeare and Steve Frost.

Nearest the pins for the day went to Peter Bush, Greg McCoy, Neville Wearing, Rod Hardy took out the pizza this pizza that hole and a visitor from Kareela golf club took the money shot Reg Harris. Ball rundown for the round went to 33c/b.

Thursday attracted 130 players with 32 visitors included in the field. Seeing a field of so many we made it 2 divisions once again with the second division from 20 and up handicaps division one naturally 0-19.

In division one Phil Day (17) must have forgot it was not a 4 ball event as he won in his own right with a round of 42 points. Visiting from the Cumberland club Paul Hilton (7) was next with a round of 41.

Dave Maloney (12) with a score of 40 got the countback after a birdie on the 13th and nearest-the-pin,and followed it up with an ace on the 15th to hole out for a 1/4.

Figuring in the countback we had Scott Thomas (Ballina) (18), Brian Burns (4), G. Myhill (14) (Tamworth), and Adam Woods (4) Sawtell. Division two was taken out by Llyal Gregory with a round of 44 points Llyal played off 21 handicap on the day but will find himself off 18.8 next time round.

Doreen Morrison (29) came in next with a round of 43 points while Don Atkinson (24) was next with 41 points.

Others with good rounds of 39, Mark O’Keefe (14 Muirfield),Warren Morley (5) South West Rocks), Peter Dawe (23), and Drew Glasson (12). With a score of 38 we had five players Stephen Ball(9), Col Wormleaton (12), Ross Donnelly (9), Dane Hamilton- Giggins (17), and Lewis Belling (11 Sawtell).

Another 4 division one players recorded 37 points Peter Moxon (13), Seaton Jones (5 Newcastle), Dave Trickett(18) and Garry Barnes (14). Pins for the round went to Mark O’Keefe, Betty Stockham, ‘The Phantom’ Mr Walker, and Uri Ylinen took out the money shot. Ball rundown for the round went to 34 c/b.

This weeks games again will be stableford rounds while we cater to the many visitors over the holidays. Golfers should be aware that we will hold our ‘Sure Shot’ Qualifier on the Ted Peck Memorial day the following January 30.
