When Peter O’Grady received the call that he would be named this year’s Nambucca Shire Council’s Senior Sports Person of the Year, his immediate reaction was “gee, they must have been low on nominees this year”.
But what the Scotts Heads local did not realise was that his dedication to the sporting world over the past 30-odd years, has inspired many people.
“I was amazed about getting the award,” Peter said.
“You always read in the paper each year about the people who win these awards and think what an honour that would be, but you never think it will be you.
“It is a very nice honour... getting an award on Australia Day is a great honour.”
Peter is having trouble getting the smile off his face.
But while it is always nice to be acknowledged, Peter said he did not do it for the awards.
Peter’s interests and commitment to rugby league in the local area and North Coast started around 39-years ago and continues today.
Most of his efforts these days is in a voluntary capacity – a real testimonial to the person he is, says Geoff O’Grady, who nominated Peter for the award.
Peter’s interest in rugby leagues covers all aspects of the sport. He has been a player, coach, registrar, secretary and president at different times throughout his life.
While the Scotts Head father-of-two may have a passion for rugby league, he has been an active
participant in many sports during his 32 years in the coastal village.
Peter was an active member of the Macksville-Scotts Head surf life saving club for over 20 years.
He helped with the renovations to the club building some years ago and was awarded life membership in 1988.
Peter was also secretary of the Macksville gift in 1992 and secretary of the Scotts Head Board Riders Club in 2000.
