Strikers prepare for round robin

26 Aug, 2010 03:23 PM
Sunday, August 29, will see the Nambucca Strikers Football Club host another popular gala day at Coronation Park.

So much football packed into one oval – you’ve got to see it to believe it.

All the Under-7 teams in the North Coast Football Optus Small-sided Football league will converge for one big round-robin.

Thirty-six teams of at least 5 players are expected. The games will run between 9am and 2pm, and the Strikers canteen will be open for the duration. (Lookout skaters, swarms of midgets in boots will over-run the skate park. At least its only once a year.)

It must have been a case of end of season jitters for the Nambucca Strikers competitive football teams, with only the Under-13 boys winning their match, against Korora Northern Storm, last weekend. Most age divisions have one more regular round to settle their nerves before the finals series. At this stage it looks like the Strikers Men (second division) and Women (third division) will both finish third in their table, setting them up for home semi-final matches in two weeks time.

The Under-14s are comfortably in second place, while the Under-13 Strikers have settled into fourth place and will make the semi-finals.

The Strikers Under-16 girls are unassailable in 2nd place. The Strikers Under-16 boys team were a reasonable chance to score against Sawtell.

Some exciting moments built up to a good shot and a goal to the Strikers in the first-half.

While the lads from the south had some near misses, including a hit on the cross-bar in the second-half, Sawtell put the ball into the back-of-the-net several times. Luck has remained consistently against the strikers Under-16 boys but they have shown a lot of character and should be proud of their teamwork.

Final score: Sawtell 5 - Nambucca Strikers 1.

Next week’s home games for August 27 and 28 are: friday at 7pm the women verse the front runners, the Dorrigo Cedars, Saturday, starting at 10am the Under-9s play the Boambee Bombers. The Under-12s play against Urunga, at 10.40am.

At 11.45 the Under-14s take on Boambee Jets, while at 1pm the Under-16 boys have their last game against the Boambee bombers and last but not least, the Under-16 girls play at 2.25pm.
